“In My Day Films made it feel simple to preserve my father’s stories. We felt guided the whole time, and the final film is something our whole family will treasure.”

In their day, things were different. The challenges, the wins, the losses, the sacrifices, the times of immense heartbreak and moments of overwhelming joy. These are the stories that shaped them. That ripple through time. Memories that deserve to be passed down for generations.

how it works
We begin with a simple conversation about who the film is for, whose story you want to preserve, and what matters most to your family. This is a chance to ask questions, share hopes for the film, and make sure the process feels right. Every life has many chapters. We help you think through the stories, themes, and moments that should be included. We take the time here to truly understand how to tailor this experience for you and your family.
Discovery
Before filming, we prepare thoughtful interview questions tailored to the person’s life that everyone has a chance to confirm. We decide together how the interview will be conducted including who will be present and where it will be located. Each person is unique. Sometimes we film and interview and other times we set the equipment up and wait in another room while a family member has an intimate conversation. This is also the time to gather any photos or home videos to be included.
Planning
We create a calm, comfortable setting and gently guide the conversation so your loved one can speak naturally, in their own voice, with their own warmth and personality. We have a decade of experience in filming thoughtful interviews and incorporate unique strategies to help everyone feel safe. We also film details such as family photos, heirlooms, handwritten notes, favourite spaces, moments at home, warm embraces with loved ones and more to bring an intimate touch to the film
Interview
We thoughtfully edit the film into its first draft which includes music of your choice. Your family has the opportunity to review the film and request refinements. This ensures the finished piece feels accurate, meaningful, and aligned with what you hoped to preserve. Once complete, your family receives a finished legacy film that can be watched, shared, and passed down for generations. More than a video, it becomes a record of a voice, a life, and the stories your family will always remember.

At In My Day Films, each story is guided with patience, care, and a deep respect for the person being interviewed. Founder Nathaniel Puffalt personally leads the filming process, helping families feel prepared, comfortable, and confident before the camera ever starts rolling.
Nathaniel Puffalt has spent the last decade creating documentaries for communities and non-profit organizations across the Canadian Prairies. His work has taken him from stories of Dëne Sųłiné communities and northern caribou herds to southern ranchers and the native prairie ecosystem fighting for a comeback. Along the way, he has interviewed hundreds of people, including First Nations Elders, leading scientists, multi JUNO Award-winning musicians, community builders, and inspiring voices from across the Prairies. His experience will ensure your interview is neither scripted nor rushed but a calm guided conversation designed to preserve a loved one's voice, memories, humour and remarkable life story.
